Another Opening, Another Sondheim at EWP

Tim Dang never met his grandfathers. “They were in their 40s when they married my grandmothers, who were teenagers, so they had passed away by the time I was growing up,” he says.

Dang therefore relates to one of the storylines in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweden-set A Little Night Music, which premiered on Broadway in 1973 and which Dang directs at East West Players in downtown’s Little Tokyo.

A company member of EWP since 1980, Dang became its artistic director in 1993. Each show EWP mounts is somehow reconsidered with an Asian influence. So, in directing Night Music, he says, “As a concept to the actors and the designers, we have imagined a very European city in 1910…a city like Shanghai.” Read more.
