Where ALTARCATIONS takes place

May 11, 2012

I’m regularly fed links to news story these days. Most have to do with yet another wrong by the Catholic Church: recently, for example, US bishops scrutinize the Girl Scouts while the Vatican looks into a sex abuse scandal among Legion of Christ priests.

It occurs to me that my play Altarcations may be assumed to be an attack against the Catholic Church. It is not.

It aims at those within the Church who shelve their vows that they may satiate their own selfishness. Many, many have. And too many have passively turned away or actively sought to shelter these abusers.

It costs the Church billions of dollars, but that’s chump change compared to the damage it wreaks on minds and bodies and souls.

In Altarcations, Tommy is 16 and a priest admits to his bishop his prurient desires toward the young man. Rachel is 40 and knows what the bishop is capable of.

All this takes place at the corner of Faith and Justice.
