L.A. Women’s Shakespeare Co presents “Women of Will”

February 23, 2011

From the release: The Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company (LAWSC) presents two benefit performances of Tina Packer’s “Women of Will,” starring Tina Packer and Nigel Gore, March 5 and 6 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, 9820 Washington Blvd., Culver City.  The performances, directed by Eric Tucker, are a benefit for LAWSC, celebrating its 18th year of producing Shakespeare with an all-female ensemble.

“Women of Will,” an exploration of gender in Shakespeare’s canon, is the prelude to Packer’s five-part series “Women of Will:  The Complete Journey,” a masterful summation of Tina Packer’s 40-odd years of deep investigation into all things Shakespeare.  “Tina is absolutely brilliant and I feel very fortunate to have her come to L.A. to share this work,” said Lisa Wolpe, producing artistic director of LAWSC.

Written after a lifetime of acting in and directing Shakespeare’s plays, Packer’s “Women of Will” combines the performance of scenes with the discussion of themes to create a dazzling and illuminating piece of work.  Packer is the founding artistic director of Shakespeare & Company, the western Massachusetts-based theatrical company celebrating its 33rd season.  Packer trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England and was an associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company.  She has directed over 200 Shakespeare productions.  The Boston Globe called her “one of the state’s great figures.”

Gore has performed the role of Men in “Women of Will” and “Women of Will: The Complete Journey.”  His extensive career has included many Shakespeare roles as well as George in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Gore is an IRNE award nominee and a two-time Elliot Norton award-winning actor.

Tucker has directed “Women of Will” and “Women of Will:  The Complete Journey” for Shakespeare & Company, “Hamlet” with William Hurt at the Stella Adler Theatre and many more.

The L.A. Women’s Shakespeare Company is preparing Wolpe’s one-woman show “Shakespeare and the Alchemy of Gender” for dates in Europe and the U.S., and to celebrate the company’s 19th year in Los Angeles, LAWSC will also produce an all-female “Hamlet” early next year.

“Women of Will” will be performed Saturday, March 5 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $35, $20 for seniors and students and are available at http://www.lawsc.net or http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/156565.  The theatre offers free parking at City Hall located across Culver Blvd. from the rear of the theatre.
