Theatre or country music? Or both?

October 12, 2010

When a show is a hit at Sacred Fools, it’s likely in my book to be a hit anywhere it goes.

From the release: “Savin’ Up for Saturday Night” caused some to think that country music and dance fans might not care to spend a couple of hours in a theatre seat, while others said that musical-theater fans wouldn’t enjoy the music and dancing in this boot-scootin, honky-tonkin’ show.

Well, the show not only got rave reviews from the critics, it extended its run thanks to country fans who kept coming back for more. And now, the show is coming to the Grove Theater in Upland for a limited run, staring Oct. 22.

Richard Levinson, the show’s songwriter, says “I kept a lot of the audience comments that we got by email and cards from the first run. They were as fun to read, if not more so, as the great reviews.  People who had never set foot in a small LA theatre came because they knew a cast member or a dancer or a musician and then returned two, sometimes three times bringing their friends with them. It was really great to see.

“I’ve been writing country songs ever since I had a hit with Burt Reynolds singing my ‘Let’s Do Something Cheap and Superficial’ way back when. (That song happens to be in the show…) A lot of my tunes  have shown up on TV shows, most recently ‘True Blood’, or sometimes  they’ve been turned into jingles or used in Jazzercise classes around the world. But this is the first time we got them all together with a great band and singers to be performed, along with a really
hot group of dancers to bring them to life.  We knew that country fans would love the show once they saw it — we just didn’t know how theater reviewers would respond, but they loved it as much as the audiences did!”

Levinson’s favorite review, in fact, came from a writer who wasn’t a country music fan when she arrived, but ended her review with “Country music is certainly not my…cup of tea… but this musical is so exuberant and so fresh that you have to enjoy it!

So, whether you’d like to hear a great band, see some terrific partner and line dancing or just enjoy an evening comedy, romance and plain old fun, “Savin’ Up for Saturday Night” has just the ticket. So come join us at the ol’ “Bar ‘n’ Fill!”

“Savin Up for Saturday Night” opens Oct. 22 and runs on weekends through November 21st. Tickets are $25 and $20, with senior, student and group discounts, and can be purchased by calling 909-920-4343 or visiting the Grove’s website at www.grovetheatre.com. There is no performance on November 6th.
