23rd annual silent movies under the stars

July 15, 2010

There’s something eclectic and memorable about watching a movie, particularly a silent one with musical accompaniment, outdoors at night. Sunday’s showing at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills is “The Lucky Devil,” a 1925 silent directed by Frank Tuttle and starring Richard Dix and Esther Ralston.

Silents Under the Stars was organized 23 years ago by Randy Haberkamp who is now the Program Coordinator of Educational and Special Projects for the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (or PCESPAFAMPAS for short).

Remember to bring a picnic and flashlight as the parking lot gets dark after screening Saturday, July 18, 8 pm.  More information at (323) 874-4005 or Hollywood Heritage’s website. Michael Mortilla is the accompanist for this series. Mr. Mortilla is a silent film accompanist and composer. Mortilla, who is based in Santa Barbara, composed and played the scores on the Kino three-volume set of Charlie Chaplin films, “The Chaplin Mutuals.”
