Soroka’s Unleashed for Twelfth Night

June 7, 2010

FROM THE RELEASE:  Coming off the successful runs of both The Unserious Chekhov and the late night show 25PPH, Theatre Unleashed is proud to present the Shakespeare classic Twelfth Night, running Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. from June 18-July 31 at The Sherry Theatre in North Hollywood.

Music, dancing, courtship, love, hookahs and swordsmanship abound in this gloriously gender jumbled romantic tale. The show follows the misadventures of the lovesick Viola (disguised as the young boy Cesario) who gets caught in a vexing love triangle with the dashing Duke Orsino and the lovelorn Olivia. These lovers, their fools and the puritans take part in a madcap trip that ends only with the discovery that there are always greater journeys just around the corner. Director Jeff Soroka draws upon 1,001 inspirations to retell this tale of misinterpreted feelings and mistaken identities in a play about the strangest people we’ve ever known and loved…ourselves.

“There are multiple vital stories in Twelfth Night that seem to constantly get short shrift and I wanted to weave those into a more complete whole than the standard comedy/clown show/morality lesson that seems to be the normal offering when performing this play,” Jeff Soroka said. “Themes of love, loss, gender and gender identity are important to this show. More important, however, is a reconceptualization of “The Other” which is integral to what I would like to accomplish. Our production has the responsibility to make clear to our audience the strangeness of what our dominant Western culture finds familiar without alienating those audience members from the story. Within the world the play inhabits, I find the relative indistinctness of time and place to enhance rather than limit the number of creative choices we can make.”

This is Soroka’s second show with Theatre Unleashed, having directed the critically acclaimed The Tempest in 2008.

In July Twelfth Night presentations will be followed by the new sketch comedy show Patriotism Unleashed. Also, after the June 19 show, the company will present on of its popular 24-Hour Theatre Events.
