Fountain extends EMMETT TILL. Again.

March 30, 2010

It’s the third extension of The Ballad of Emmett Till at Hollywood’s Fountain Theatre. The show now runs through May 30 and pushes back the next production, the LA premiere of OPUS by Michael Hollinger. OPUS focuses on a world-famous ensemble that threatens to unravel as it prepares for its highest-profile performance when its most talented member goes missing and a young woman is hired to take his place. OPUS is now slated to open on June 19.

FROM THE RELEASE: The Ballad of Emmett Till, which has received rave reviews in its West Coast premiere at the Fountain, is Chicago-based playwright Ifa Bayeza’s joyful celebration of 14-year old Emmett Till’s life prior to his murder in 1955 – the incident which many remember as the spark of the American civil rights movement.

Bayeza has created a lyrical integration of past, present, fact and legend that is part history, part mystery and part ghost story, turning Emmett’s story into a soaring work of music, poetic language and riveting theatricality.

“Anchoring the strong ensemble cast of ‘The Ballad of Emmett Till,’ [Lorenz] Arnell’s joyous performance reminds us that before the death that shocked the nation, there was a very vibrant life,” wrote Darrell L. Hope in the March issue of Venice Magazine.

The Ballad of Emmett Till was named “Critic’s Choice” in the Los Angeles Times, “Critic’s Pick” in Back Stage, “the best ticket in Los Angeles to be found” by BroadwayWorld, and designated “Ovation Recommended” by LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award voters.

The Ballad of Emmett Till
is directed by Shirley Jo Finney and features Bernard K. Addison, Rico E. Anderson, Lorenz Arnell, Adenrele Ojo, and Karen Malina White.
