PROGRESS UPDATE: Gates McFadden on twin Atwater Village Theatres

February 28, 2010

Compared to just three weeks ago, a lot of progress has taken place in the twin 99-seat theatre spaces that Ensemble Studio Theatre LA and Circle X are about to open. ESTLA’s artistic director, Gates McFadden, was dressed in blue coveralls (a nice little French contractor’s number) this morning, working side by side with sub-contractors. Time is of the essence: Winterfest 2010 opens Wednesday, March 3.

“At least we’ll have seats in. We have to build the platforms, fireproof the material, add the seats.” By when? “Oh, tonight,” she says, not exactly nonplussed.

Winterfest will take place in the south theatre. Lights will be placed, for now, on vertical poles. By the grand opening gala on April 10, McFadden says the north theatre will be open, too; the walls will be soundproofed and the ceilings will be lined with pipes, so lights can be placed at will. “Both spaces give us the advantage of movable seats and a movable stage,” she says. “We can customize each theatre, depending on a show’s needs.”

There is a shared green room, and each theatre has its own upstairs control booth.

You can see what they’re dealing with. These shots were taken at about noon today. Construction STOPS tomorrow at 3pm, so volunteers can come in and clean. That leaves a day to prep for the beginning of Winterfest: 24 plays in 10 days.

I asked Circle X’s Tim Wright how it feels to have a new home. “I don’t know,” he said. “There isn’t even a place to sit yet.”

Thank you for keeping us up-to-date on “Gate’s Atwater Village Theatre Project”. I’m trying to picture what the “french number” is but all I can see is maybe a collar turned up, sleeved rolled, and calf length pants. But anyways, no matter what, this theatre will be a great addition. The Artist put 200% into this little endeavor and it will pay off. Gates – Merci pour votre dédicace
