The Vagina Monologues to benefit V-Day and the Sojourn Womens Shelter

February 4, 2010

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:

The Vagina Monologues written by Eve Ensler, directed by Joni Panotta, and produced by V-Day.org and Panotta, will have a three-performance limited engagement Friday, February 12 at 8:00 pm, Saturday, February13 at 8:00 pm, and Sunday, February 14 at 2:00 pm, at the NoHo Actors’ Studio

“The Vagina Monologues is made up of a number of individual monologues, all of which somehow relate to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality. The purpose of the piece has evolved from a celebration of vaginas and femininity to a movement to stop violence against women.”

“The Vagina Monologues is the cornerstone of the V-Day movement, whose participants stage benefit performances of the show and/or host other related events in their communities to benefit organizations which are part of the movement to stop violence again women. Such events take place worldwide each year between February 1 and April 30, and in the past ten years have raised over $70 million for the cause.” That includes Korean women.

When Joni Panotta, director/producer of The Vagina Monologues Benefit Performances at the NoHo Actors’ Studio was asked about what made her decide to support the cause she replied, “When I first heard about the atrocities in the DRC, I was shocked that such things still go on today in the 21st century!  I really wanted to do something about it.  I realized that many women suffer from violent abuse at the hands of others, including their partners!

“I had gotten involved last year in South Korea through another American gal who introduced me to the V-Day Movement which inspired me to do further research.  So, I participated in supporting the South Korea event.  This year, I wanted to challenge myself and spearhead a production of “The Vagina Monologues” locally, here in North Hollywood.”

The Vagina Monologues plays Friday, February 12 at 8:00 pm, Saturday, February13 at 8:00 pm, and Sunday, February 14 at 2:00 pm, at the NoHo Actors’ Studio. This event also offers refreshments, merchandise, and auction items for purchase. Event proceeds are being donated to V-Day.org and OPCC – Sojourn, a battered womens shelter in Santa Monica.
